The federal government passed legislation a while back that directly concerns not-for-profit corporations (organizations). Ontario is in a similar process.
Existing, federally registered non-for-profit (including charities, of course) organizations in Canada, will have re-registered with Corporations Canada as of October 2014. The Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act came into force on October 17, 2011. Make sure you have done the proper paperwork.
If you are an existing, Ontario provincially registered not-for-profit organization, necessary actions should have been made by your organization. The Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act, 2010, began its period of consolidation on October 25, 2010. It became law in 2017. If you are registered in Ontario, you have (had) a three year transition period to update your documentation. As of 2021, best that you connect with Ontario to find where you stand. Government and molasses, but the intentions are good.
