The federal government passed legislation a while back that directly concerns not-for-profit corporations (organizations). Ontario is in a similar process.
Existing, federally registered non-for-profit (including charities, of course) organizations in Canada, will have re-registered with Corporations Canada as of October 2014. The Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act came into force on October 17, 2011. Make sure you have done the proper paperwork.
If you are an existing, Ontario provincially registered not-for-profit organization, necessary actions should have been made by your organization. The Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act, 2010, began its period of consolidation on October 25, 2010. It became law in 2017. The legislation came into force on the 19th October 2021. If you are registered in Ontario, you have a three year transition period to update your documentation. Best that you connect with Ontario to follow up on the necessary changes to your organization.
